Welcome Weekend at Devil’s Thumb Ranch

With many guests staying at Devil’s Thumb Ranch for the weekend, it was important to the couple that their welcome party felt relaxed and inviting, letting everyone soak in the beauty of the setting without leaning too much into a western theme. We planned an outdoor evening at the Ranch, but when the weather changed, we made a last-minute move to Broad Axe Barn. I find these little surprises often become the moments everyone remembers most.

Moving inside created a cozier, more intimate feel than we imagined. The candlelight, bistro lights, fireplaces, and smaller floral touches softened the barn and kept the evening welcoming and relaxed. Guests moved between the barn and deck throughout the night, with the mountains and changing weather becoming part of the atmosphere.

Instead of making the welcome party feel completely separate from the wedding itself, we carried many of the design details throughout the weekend. The lighter florals, relaxed styling, and layered textures established the tone early and made the transition into the wedding day feel natural.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch weddings often lean rustic or heavily mountain-inspired, but E + D approached the property differently. The design introduced softer garden-inspired elements that brought a lighter, more layered feel to the weekend while still feeling appropriate to the setting.

Hosted in late summer, the wedding took place across Broad Axe Lawn and High Lonesome Barn, with many guests staying throughout the weekend at the Ranch. The balance between refined design and an immersive mountain experience influenced many of the planning decisions from the beginning. The couple prioritized guest experience, an easy rhythm to the day, and a lively dance party before hosting a nighttime after party.

The floral palette, mixed linens, alternating napkin colors, and bistro lighting added warmth and variety without feeling too traditional or rustic. The result felt relaxed, editorial, and very natural within the Ranch environment.

The Wedding Day at Devil’s Thumb Ranch

The lighter, layered approach from the welcome party continued into the wedding day. Impressionist paintings inspired much of the color palette, with softer blues, greens, purples, and pinks woven throughout the florals, linens, stationery, and reception details. Mixed linens, alternating napkin colors, draping, and bistro lighting softened the barn environment while still fitting the Ranch setting.

Personal details appeared throughout the day without overwhelming the design. Vintage shelving displayed family photographs, cocktail napkins were embossed with handwritten notes exchanged during the couple’s relationship, and the bride designed much of the stationery and signage herself. Even the Lambeth-style cake felt in step with the weekend itself: classic, layered, and slightly nostalgic without feeling overly formal.

One of the most memorable moments came just before dinner when the couple shared their first dance on High Lonesome Patio during cocktail hour. Timing the first dance this way gave guests a chance to take in the mountain views and changing light before the evening moved indoors for dinner, dancing, and a packed dance floor that lasted late into the night.
